Exit Polls unanimous on BJP wins in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh

One of the best onlooker games of our circumstances are Indian decisions and these races in Gujarat (and Himachal Pradesh) appear to have gotten the nation's creative ability in a way that is extraordinary. Leave surveys maybe look to save us of some tension and satisfy our unending need to know 'Who's triumphant?'. The genuine outcomes might be known on Monday, December 18, when the votes fixed in EVMs in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh will be tallied. Till then the leave survey numbers keep the level headed discussions fuelled.

While surveyors have not hit the nail on the head in past surveys — whether it be the 2014 Lok Sabha races or the state get together surveys in Uttar Pradesh recently, where most neglected to anticipate the colossal edge the BJP in the end won by — these numbers are, best case scenario demonstrative of patterns in these surveys.

Rahul Gandhi's recently discovered faithful comrades, Jignesh (Mevani), Alpesh (Thakore) and Hardik (Patel) — who did a great part of the truly difficult work — appear to have had too little an impact to influence significant numbers far from the BJP. Rahul may think back and say he consolidated all the counter BJP powers in Gujarat yet in our first-past-the-post framework, Westminster-style majority rule government, vote offer and edges of triumph are a failure's incidental award that may help win some brownie focuses on TV talks about.

Modi Magic Works

In the event that the surveyors haven't driven us adrift, these surveys have unquestionably repeated how Prime Minister Narendra Modi's magnetism functions. His crusade - 34 mobilizes in Gujarat — were maybe the swing factor for the BJP. It would likewise demonstrate that the BJP's gathering hardware has practically idealized the layout for winning races - following quite a while of minority and coalition governments in India.

Similarly as an update that these are simply leave surveys, and most accompany an admonition that they've represented how individuals voted in the second stage in Gujarat till 2 pm, may the best man win on Monday.

Bulk Whatsapp Service provider

Resign if you are not fit to work: HC to resident docs on strike in Maharashtra

The Bombay high court on Tuesday slammed resident doctors who have resorted to a strike since Monday to protest the recent attacks on their colleagues. It also granted liberty to hospital managements where the resident doctors are employed to take action against those who have on strike.

“You are not fit to be doctors,” said the division bench of Chief Justice Manjula Chellur and justice Girish Kulkarni. “You are fit to be an ordinary factory worker if you insist that you will not resume work until your demands are fulfilled,” the bench said.

The comment came after lawyer representing the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) contended that no security has been provided to doctors, although repeated orders have been passed by this court. Claiming that the resident doctors have not resorted to a strike, but have legitimately filed for leave with their respective higher authorities, the lawyer further contended that the demands of resident doctors have not been met, although assurances have been given in that regard to the court, and therefore resident doctors cannot continue to work in an atmosphere of fear. View more:-Bulk Sms Service provider

“Doctors cannot go on mass leave or resort to tactics like ‘go slow’,” said the bench, while refusing to take the excuses put forth by the lawyer into consideration. “If other doctors are working in the same hospitals without fear, we don’t understand what the problem with resident doctors is,” said the bench, adding, “Resign if you are not fit to work there and let other doctors take your place.”

Government doctors work in trying conditions. The least they need is safety

Here’s what they don’t teach you in medical school: Self-defence. Perhaps they should. After all patients, or more accurately their relatives, are known to beat up doctors who bear bad news.

Think I’m exaggerating? Watch the YouTube video of the assault that landed Dr Rohan Mhamunkar of Dhule in the ICU. The doctor’s suggestion that a patient with severe head injuries should be taken to another hospital since his didn’t have a neurologist, provoked an attack by some 25 relatives. As the doctor falls back on an empty bed, you can see one of them repeatedly stomp on him.

The Dhule attack is one of four in the span of a week in Maharashtra. In Nashik, three doctors and a nurse were assaulted after a patient they brought in died of swine flu.

At Sion Hospital, Mumbai, relatives of a patient who died of chronic kidney failure beat up a first-year resident. The most recent attack on a senior woman pediatrician, also at Sion Hospital, took place after 4,000 resident doctors had already gone on strike, ironically, to demand protection.

“We’re only asking for safety measures,” says Dr Parthiv Sanghvi, secretary of the Indian Medical Association’s Maharashtra chapter. Specifically, the striking doctors want security, action against the culprits and restriction on the number of relatives accompanying patients.View more:-Bulk Sms Service provider

“Exemplary punishment,” adds Parikshit Tank, a doctor in private practice who is supporting his colleagues in government hospitals, “Would be a strong deterrent.” Right now, of the 53 cases of assaults on doctors in the past three years in Maharashtra, there have been zero convictions. “The message is, assault a doctor and get bail,” says Tank.

Insight: Ailing doctor-patient relationship needs urgent cure

“We know stoppage of work amounts to contempt of court and violation of the oath we took upon entering the medical profession, but what can we do when violent attacks have become such a regular feature of our lives?”

This statement by a student-doctor at the medicine department of the Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital and Medical College in suburban Mumbai sums up the problem that drove Maharashtra’s 4,000-odd medical students to bunk work for six days – starting Sunday.

Since March 12, 2017, there have been six instances of patients’ kith and kin attacking doctors at public hospitals across Latur, Dhule, Nashik, Sangli and Mumbai districts. A particularly glaring incident was the assault on Dhule civil hospital doctor Rohan Mahamunkar, who was admitted to the intensive care unit after being blinded in one eye.

The state’s resident doctors have two major demands: one, restrictions on the entry of patients’ relatives to ensure that mobs don’t gather at hospitals and, two, additional security personnel on the premises.View more:-Bulk Sms Service provider

There’s nothing new about their demands. Though the government promised additional security and visitation curbs after several similar protests in the past, they have mostly remained on paper.

Govt questions NYT’s wisdom after editorial slams Modi's pick of CM Adityanath

The external affairs ministry on Friday took exception to an editorial in The New York Times, which criticised the BJP’s decision to appoint Yogi Adityanath as the Uttar Pradesh chief minister.

Referring to the article, titled ‘Modi’s Perilous Embrace of Hindu Extremists’, external affairs ministry spokesperson Gopal Baglay said: “All editorials or opinions are subjective. This case is particularly so. The wisdom in doubting the verdicts of genuine democratic exercises – at home or abroad – is questionable.”

The archaeology department is all set to undertake DNA testing of various artefacts that have been discovered at this site which will help in tracing the lineage of pre-historic humans, their food habits, lifestyle, and how their population later became extinct, the officials said.

Last year, team of experts from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) discovered a signet made of clay with ornamental design was among the about 3,000 ancient artefacts at the Keezhadi Pallai Sandhaipudur village in Sivaganga district of Tamil Nadu during an excavation.

Bangladesh Launches 'Operation Twilight' To Capture Terrorists In Sylhet

DHAKA:  ISIS news agency Amaq has claimed that the terrorist group has bombed security forces in Bangladesh's Sylhet. The report claimed that at least 6 people, including a policeman and a terrorist, have died in the attack when a grenade was hurled into a crowd. According to the report, the incident happened when a crowd had gathered near a building where terrorists were hiding. The security forces had surrounded the area, and had initiated an operation to flush out the terrorists. Despite orders to stay indoors, around 500 people had gathered at a residential area in Dakshin Surma in Sylhet's Shibbari area to watch the security operation against terrorists holed up in a 5-storey residential building. Several residents were trapped inside, but the security forces managed to evacuate most of the residents of the building.

The military operation - named 'Operation Twilight' - was launched on Saturday, after a 48-hour siege by security forces failed to drive the terrorists out of the residential building. According to a news report, Bangladeshi officials said that army para-commandos led by a Major General launched the operation. They were assisted by Bangladesh Police's Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) unit, counter-terrorism unit and the elite anti-crime Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).

"GOC (General Officer Commanding) of our Sylhet-based 17 Infantry Division, Major General Anwarul Momen is leading the 'Operation Twilight' there," a military spokesman told news agency PTI. TV channels were barred from live coverage of the operation.

The operation is still under way. Locals says gunshots were heard from the building this morning. Bangladesh Police said that the terrorists are believed to be the operatives of neo-Jamaat-un-Mujahideen Bangladesh, or neo-JMB - the same group which was behind the July 1 terror attack on a Dhaka cafe in which 22 people, including 17 foreigners, were killed in 2016. The neo-JMB is said to be inclined to ISIS.

Around 70 people were rescued and evacuated before the military and security forces launched a full-scale military operation.

Before the military operation, the police used megaphones, telling the terrorists to surrender. The previous night, the authorities had cut-off the gas and electricity supply to the building.

Bangladesh, which has witnessed a spate of attacks on activists, foreigners and religious minorities since 2013, has launched a massive crackdown on terrorists - especially after last year's Dhaka cafe attack in which 29 people (including the terrorists) were killed and several others were injured.

No Need To Worry About H-1B Visa Issue For Now, Says Sushma Swaraj

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Thursday said there was no reason to worry about the curbs on H1-B visas or the job security of Indian IT professionals working in the US for the time being as the Indian government is in talks with the US regarding this.

"Currently there are four bills in the US Congress about curbs on H1-B visas. We are engaged (in a dialogue) with the US at very high level regarding this... We are making all efforts (through diplomatic channels) to ensure these bills are not passed," Sushma said in the Rajya Sabha.

"So there is no reason to worry about it as of now," she added.

The Minister pointed out that even before Donald Trump became President, there had been a "flip-flop" in the H1-B visa policy by the US.

"In 1990 when H1-B visas were first introduced, the cap was 65,000. In 2000 it was raised to 1,95,000 for three years. In 2004 the number of these visas was again reversed to 65,000 by the US. So there has been a flip-flop on this policy even before Donald Trump government," she said.

The Minister also informed the house that the visa facility extended to the spouse of the Indian professionals has not been withdrawn by the US so far.

On illegal migrants, Sushma said that the US authorities have given a list of 271 persons who they have identified for deportation.

"We have asked for more details about these 271 persons. Once we check their antecedents and find they are actually Indian citizens, we'll provide them travel documents back to India so that they are not put behind bars by US authorities," she said.

She said India will once again raise the issue of totalisation once "the jobs of Indian IT professionals are ensured to be secure".

Shiv Sena MP Ravindra Gaikwad Leaves Train Midway, Untraceable

MUMBAI:HIGHLIGHTS Shiv Sena MP Ravindra Gaikwad, who was forced to take a train from Delhi after all major airlines in the country put him on their no-fly list for assaulting a senior Air India official, on Saturday did not get down at the Mumbai Central station here as expected.

He is understood to have got down at Vapi station in Gujarat, Sena sources said. However, it was not clear whether he headed for Mumbai or Osmanabad, his constituency.

Mr Gaikwad, who had on Thursday abused and assaulted a 60-year-old duty manager of the national carrier with slippers over not being able to fly business class despite having boarded an all-economy Pune-New Delhi flight, had not reached his home at Umarga in Osmanabad district till 9 pm on Saturday even as his supporters and media persons gathered there.

There was speculation that he would meet Sena president Uddhav Thackeray, who has sought an explanation from him over the incident.

Air India and major domestic airlines have barred the 57-year-old MP from flying as he refused to apologise for the incident that triggered nationwide outrage.

Mr Gaikwad boarded the August Kranti Express, which left for Mumbai from Hazrat Nizamuddin station at 4.50 pm on Friday.

Delhi Police has registered two FIRs, charging him with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Mr Gaikwad has remained defiant and unrepentant, and instead blamed the airline employee, R Sukumar, for the incident.

"Kaahe ka pashchaataap (what is there to repent)? I will not apologise ... he (Sukumar) should come and apologise. Then we will see. A 60-year-old man should know how to behave," he had said in Delhi yesterday.

Rajat Gupta's daughter, school friends take witness stand

NEW YORK: A day after former Goldman Sachs director Rajat Gupta notified the court that he will not testify in his own defence, his eldest daughter and close friends took the witness stand on his behalf in the high-profile insider trading trial.

The defence on Monday presented in Manhattan federal court character witnesses, who testified about Gupta's honesty and integrity, before it prepares to wrap its case by tomorrow. Closing arguments in the trial, which is running in its fourth week, will be made on Wednesday.

Gupta's 33-year-old daughter Geetanjali, the last to take the witness stand yesterday, told the jury in a confident voice that she had studied law and management at Harvard and currently works for the Harvard Management Company.

She has been regularly attending her father's trial, sitting with her mother and three sisters in the spectators' bench right behind Gupta, who sometimes turns and leans back to talk to his family during breaks in the court proceedings.

As Geetanjali walked up to the witness stand, Gupta's gaze followed her. However, her testimony was interrupted by the prosecution which raised an objection when Gupta's lawyer Gary Naftalis began questioning her about a September 2008 conversation she had with her father regarding his investment with Galleon hedge fund founder Raj Rajaratnam.
Due to a lengthy discussion between the judge and attorneys over the objection, the jury was dismissed for the day and the testimony of Geetanjali, a mother of two-year-old twin girls, will resume later today.

Gupta's lawyer, who had said last week it was "highly likely" that he will testify in his defense, conveyed to the judge on Sunday that his client will not take the witness stand "after substantial reflection and consideration."
If convicted 63-year-old Gupta, who served on boards of various companies, faces up to 25 years in prison.

IGGMC to get Rs 338 crore in 3 years

NAGPUR: With the sword of the Medical Council of India (MCI) hanging over the head of 12 medical colleges in the state for retaining the existing seats, the Maharashtra ministry of finance has, in principle, agreed to fund all the developmental projects in 2-3 phases in the coming years in these colleges.

This includes Rs338 crore for the Indira Gandhi Government Medical Colleges (IGGMC) in the city with 150 seats. The decision in this regard was taken during a meeting on Monday at Mumbai. Chief of directorate of medical education and research (DMER) Dr Pravin Shingare told TOI that the directorate presented the status of all the 12 colleges in the meeting.

The IGGMC funding will be sanctioned and released in 2-3 instalments in as many years. "These colleges have already been issued warnings from the MCI and hence there is urgent need to fill the vacant posts and install all major equipment on priority followed by other constructional requirements," said Dr Shingare.

The college acting dean Anuradha V Shrikhande said that the colleges needed money under nine different heads for the administrative building, the 500 bedded hospital, Resident Medical Officer (RMO) Hostel (400 bedded), mortuary, laundry, elevated storage reservoir and sewage etc, equipment and manpower. "Filling posts and purchasing equipment will be the first priority and the money for this would come first," she said.

The Rs97 crore administrative building would house the dean's office, administrative offices of all the 14 departments and laboratories of para-clinical subjects- microbiology, pathology, biochemistry, four seminar rooms of 180 capacity, four lecture halls of 350 capacity and two lecture halls of gallery type (auditorium type), upgraded library and the Central Research Laboratory.

Ruckus washes out budget session

RANCHI: The budget session of the state assembly, which was on Thursday adjourned sine die five days before schedule has set a bad precedent in ways more than one.

Four opposition legislators were suspended for the entire session for hurling chairs, throwing slippers and spraying foam at speaker Dinesh Oraon during the winter session in November last year.

Though the speaker agreed in-principle to revoke the suspension a day later, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) legislators Amit Mahto, Paulus Soren, Shashibhushan Samad and Congress MLA Irfan Ansari's suspensions were lifted on Thursday, minutes before the house was adjourned indefinitely. The MLAs, however, had not tendered any apology to the speaker for their behaviour.

However, three Bills concerning establishment of separate private universities, VAT amendment Bill, state minorities commission amendment Bill and amendment bill for Jharkhand state universities were passed through voice vote amid protests by opposition against amendments to the Chotanagpur Tenancy (CNT) Act and Santhal Paragana Tenancy Act.

Due to persistent disruptions by the opposition parties against amendments in the tenancy laws, little over 1,100 questions tabled by legislators for the Raghubar Das government remained unanswered after demonstrations on the floor washed out all the question hours.

Nawaz Sharif again praises Burhan Wani

ISLAMABAD: Needling India, Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Thursday again praised Hizbul Mujahideen militant Burhan Wani calling him a "vibrant and charismatic leader".

Sharif while addressing an International Parliamentary Seminar on Kashmir here, called for an end to the "continued suffering" of generations in Kashmir.

The world needs to tell India that "enough is enough" with regard to its policy towards Kashmir, Dawn newspaper quoted Sharif as saying.

Referring to Burhan Wani as a "vibrant and charismatic leader", he said that his "martyrdom has become a rallying point for the freedom loving people".

He claimed that "a promise was made to Kashmir 70 years ago, not only by Pakistan and the United Nations, but also by India to recognise the people's right to self-determination".

He also spoke about the efforts made to highlight the plight of the Kashmiri people at international fora and told the conference that Pakistan would continue to support the struggle of the people in the region.

Sharif while addressing a joint session of Parliament in October last year had praised Wani, drawing a strong reaction from India which said this shows Pakistan's attachment to terrorism.

He had also praised the militant during his address to the UN General Assembly on September 21, describing him as a "young leader".

India had strongly criticised Sharif's speech at the UN, describing it as an act of "self-incrimination"

Deal Between BJP and Reddy to Fund Karnataka Election, Alleges Kumaraswamy

Bengaluru: This is the season of allegations in Karnataka with Assembly election just a year away. And former Karnataka chief minister H D Kumaraswamy has made a rather serious one -that the BJP is going to be funded for the Assembly elections of 2018 by its former minister and indeed one of the most infamous politicians of the State, Janardhan Reddy.

Former Karnataka chief minister H D Kumaraswamy, also State president of the Janata Dal (Secular), took on Reddy at a conference of its office bearers, current and former elected representatives, and supporters on Thursday.
"There is a fixed deal... That Reddy would give Rs 500 crore for the next election... and all cases against him would be weakened. That's why you are seeing properties that had been seized or attached from him are being given back," Kumaraswamy said.

Asked to elaborate, Kumaraswamy told News18 that he had some information gathered through "proper channels" that certain important people in the Central Government have told Reddy ‘they were ready to safeguard his interests’, "take care" of all his cases.

"What (Prime Minister) does Narendra Modi say at public forums? That he wants to curb corruption. But in other ways, for the elections in Karnataka, they are fixing several corporate companies or rich people (and not just Reddy) who are facing issues with Central government machinery or agencies, to favour them. They are demanding money. I don't know why they are collecting money like this because they already have a lot of money. Officially, in their accounts, they have Rs 3,000 crore. Even then, why do they want to safeguard the interest of people involved in illegal activities," Kumaraswamy asked.

Asked about recent amendments to laws regarding funding of political parties, he told News18 that loopholes are being created deliberate in all new Bills to facilitate illegal activities, even in Bills that are aimed at "changing the system."

Navjot Singh Sidhu Can Continue TV Innings, Amarinder Too in Favour

Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Thursday said his cabinet colleague Navjot Singh Sidhu should be allowed to do the television show, if that is his main source of income.

He personally felt Sidhu should be allowed to make his living by continuing to earn through the TV show, if that was his main source of income, an official release quoting the Chief Minister said in Chandigarh.

"How does one live without adequate income?" he asked, adding "do they (those opposing Sidhu's appearance on the TV show) want to make ministers corrupt (by stopping them from earning their livelihood)?"

As he did not know the legal issues in the matter, Amarinder said he would wait for the Punjab Advocate General's opinion, the release said.

The Chief Minister said he did not personally think there was any conflict of interest, as stated by the Attorney General of India, it said.

Amarinder had earlier said he had no objection on Sidhu continuing to appear on television, but would change his portfolio of culture minister if it was in conflict with his show.

The official release quoted Amarinder as saying in an interview to a private channel.

Narendra Modi, in Twitter banter with Ravi Shastri, used wit and cricketing jargon to produce magic PR

Every now and then you hear of Narendra Modi's PR machine, its Indo-American antecedents, and how it uses clever slippery tactics to keep the prime minister in the limelight. To the best of my knowledge, no one has quite identified the team behind these machinations, and we perhaps give Modi less credit than he deserves. Even if there is this crack SAS equivalent of public relations honchos plotting and planning strategies, it's still got to get the Modi good governance stamp of approval.

For example, the clever way in which he responded to Ravi Shastri's congratulatory note on Twitter with a little bit of cricket lingo thrown in. That requires savvy, a developed sense of wit, and a certain flair not usually seen in our politicians.

This is where Modi scores. He adds that extra dimension and makes the message a little more thoughtful. If you are on his side you can see it as smart. If you are not a fan of his, you can dismiss the chat as no big deal. Which is true — it really is no big deal. But the others don't do it, and the effort he puts in creating bespoke situations for full effect is a sign of character. A PR executive tells me that Modi has mastered this art.

If there is a team functioning to make him marketable 24/7, and have him quoted in multiple fashion so that the rest of the competition is eclipsed, they have also introduced him to being pithy and brief yet make an impact.

In the world of PR, it's known as creating magic moments for your client. These can be singular and specific to an occasion, or general in content; but they are like beads in a necklace which ensure a continuity of the individual in the public eye. As one magic moment fades away or goes up the string, he is ready with the next one.

Sometimes, the strategy can include a bit of self-imposed criticism or even a dollop of negativity followed by a positive. Even his performance in the Varanasi roadshow, which upset purists like me who thought he was compromising security, was overwhelmingly received by the public as a display of guts and glory.
